HAAM seeking donations for back to school drive.
HUMBLE, Texas - Most people in Northeast Harris County are familiar with the Humble Area Assistance Ministries or "HAAM" because of their retail outlets in Humble and the newer "boutique" store, the Black Cat Junction in Kingwood. Operating these retail outlets is a very small part of what HAAM does for the community on a daily basis.
On August 9th and 10th HAAM will be distributing school supplies for approximately 1700 students living in a 12 zip-code service area that includes all of Humble ISD.
According to HAAM's assistant executive director, Millie Garrison, "there is a still a need for donations." Garrison is encouraging folks who might be out shopping between now and over the weekend to take advantage of some of the sales and perhaps pick something up to donate to this worthwhile program. Currently HAAM is in need of supplies for middle school students the most.
Donating is easy, you can drop off supplies at the HAAM Social Services Building, 1302 First Street in Humble, Monday - Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.; You can make a monetary donation by completing and mailing the contribution form available by clicking here; or you can donate online via their secure website at www.haamministries.org.
Supported by a volunteer force that in 2012 numbered 2700 contributing more than 67,000 volunteer hours, HAAM provides assistance to community members who are experiencing crisis situations. They offer food, clothing, and financial assistance for rent, utilities, and other basic needs as well as referral information about resources that can help in other ways (shelter, legal assistance, etc.).
HAAM also provides "self-sufficiency" assistance designed to help members of the community who are unemployed and under-employed persons find work through services such as one-on-one assistance - individualized sessions with trained volunteers who offer practical suggestions to employment problems, computer guidance for beginners to intermediate users.
For participants they they have job listings with current employment openings and a computer lab and available throughout the week for employment search tasks and technology training.
